Hosts
....are natives of New Orleans
Exquisite collection of antiques
Your
hosts, Bonnie and Paul, live in a separate home
on the estate near the guest house, close enough
to accommodate guests' needs or special requests.
Bonnie and Paul are both natives of New Orleans.
Bonnie is a retired high school teacher and former
owner of an interior and exterior plant-scaping
business. Paul is a retired professional engineer;
he worked at NASA Stennis Space Center in Mississippi.
Bonnie and Paul have been landscaping and developing
the estate for 35 years. Your hosts are enthusiastic
about horticulture, nature, and New Orleans cuisine
and traditions. They are generous in sharing their
knowledge with guests and they take great pleasure
in informing guests of the many great restaurants,
local events and attractions. Sharing their sanctuary
and pampering guests is their delight.
Bonnie and Paul have been avid collectors of fine
antiques for 40 years. They have amassed an exquisite
collection of Louisiana, American and English
antiques and artwork. Tours of the main house,
a unique custom design, are always welcome.
In Perfect balance and harmony with the landscape,
the guest house is located on a high ridge of
land between two bayous, Bayou Liberty and Bayou
Bonfouca, two miles west of the City of Slidell,
Louisiana. These bayous flow west into Lake Pontchartrain
which is just north of the city of New Orleans.
This rural area is predominantly populated with
multi-acre home sites adjacent to these two bayous.
Over
the past 200 years, the ten acre estate has been
the site of several homes which were used as fishing
and hunting lodges. The central part of the guest
house was built around the turn of the century,
circa 1900-1905. The Myers family owned the property
into the 1960's. However, it was abandoned for
many years until it was sold in 1968 to a New
Orleans doctor and his wife. They had the vision
and foresight to restore the structure with the
help of an artist friend, Bob Helmer, who was
a professor in the architecture department at
Tulane University in New Orleans. Mr. Helmer had
the architectural skills blended with artistic
talents and sensitivity for capturing the perfect
balance and harmony with the landscape. His use
of panoramic glass views overlooking the gardens
is typical of homes in the New Orleans garden
district. His use of a high cathedral ceiling
in the great room with its exposed beams and vaulting
walls of glass makes the perfect connection with
the garden.
